It is a switching relay, but not for what you're thinking.

You might have one on your refrigerator if it was made by Frigidaire or somewhere on an old GM car

Does it have to do with the open-door switch for the dome light, then?

Not that expensive. A/C wasn't that costly of an option back in the day.

It is a thermal limiting switch for an ac compressor used by GM

This would go out as a safety to prevent the compressor from burning itself up if the ac system was put under abnormal loads.

A lot of old gm cars with ac that doesn't work usually just need to have one of these replaced.

Is it some sort of thermal resistive spdt relay for black magic?

Small block Chevy engine. Too easy it's written right on it

Yes

It is a thermal limiting switch for older gm cars.

It would go out as a safety to prevent the ac compressor from burning up under unusual loads. If you find an old gm car with ac that doesn't work, chances are it just needs one of these.

You're right! It's a prototype plug-in hybrid system for a small block chevy from the 60s

The Volt and ELR are derived from this

It's the famous Small Block Chevrolet engine.

Or an A/C thermal limiter switch.

Thermal limiter is correct.

Ohhh neat, we use these (not exactly these) for hot water system controls since they're so easy to mount (strap on strap off). Nowadays I imagine they monitor current instead?

It's an SBC switch.

I truthfully don't know how modern ones work.

It's not GM, but my 03 Rubicon doesn't have one of these and there's nothing that looks like it would monitor current.

I'm not well versed in air conditioning systems.

If the SBC came with air conditioning it would have one.

aww, well this is clearly a REP 6551258, which is an obvious advancement over the 6551256. lets not even get into the debacle that was the 6551257

It's really not that expensive. Those should be pesos.
